At the business meeting Michael Driscoll gave his final report as Treasurer. He explained that the funding sources for the academy are three-fold: free-will offering taken up at the annual meeting, gifts of more than $100 from academy members, and donations from institutions.
Paul Turner gave an in-person report on the activities of ICEL.
Written reports from other standing organisms were received by the academy committee to be posted on the CAL website. The meeting was adjourned at 12:00.
Panel Description:
Children are called to engage “the full, conscious, and active part in liturgical celebrations” that liturgy demands and to which baptism commits them (SC 14). From their perspectives as professors, parents, catechists, and children of God, panelists will explore theological foundations, catechetical and mystagogical principles, and practical pastoral strategies connecting children and liturgy to spark further discussion among CAL members in attendance at the 2022 annual meeting. Particular topics for discussion might include:
How do children discern connections between liturgy and life? What implications might this have for how God prepares children for liturgy, for how children might prepare themselves, and for how liturgies might be prepared with consideration for fostering the full, embodied participation of children in body, mind, and spirit?
How can various stakeholders help children participate more fully in the Church’s official liturgies?
How might parishes “bless” and encourage the various liturgies that unfold within domestic churches in both ordinary and extraordinary times?
What hopes and strategies might the Church cultivate for the liturgical formation of children who are rarely present “in church”?
How might classroom teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels serve as a venue for theological reflection and preparation for future catechesis of children?
How do the attitudes and actions of the Church’s ministers and the gathered people of God in particular praying communities promote or hinder the liturgical participation of children and families?
How do the diverse arts of worship help children understand and appropriate their faith through a process of lex orandi, lex credendi, lex vivendi?
Panelists:
• Kimberly Hope Belcher, Associate Professor of Theology, University of Notre Dame
• Nathaniel Marx, Associate Professor of Sacramental and Liturgical Theology, St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology
• Anne McGowan, Assistant Professor of Liturgy, Catholic Theological Union
